Do You Have The Perfection Curse?

Read time: 3 minutes

It’s been a long time since you’ve heard from me.

Whether you’re reading this newsletter on LinkedIn or Medium, where I haven’t posted a long form article in more than a year, or whether it’s hitting your inbox, “where the heck has Isvari been?” is a valid question.

This is because for a long time, I fell prey to the perfection curse.

I was getting feedback on the first newsletter, the Superhero 81 course, the format of these articles, and more. I was making sure I could commit to once a week, every week. I was building a team to help me keep it running.

But all you really need for a newsletter is mailing software and the ability to type something. Anything.

Most ideas start as a pen on paper. And that’s enough.

Do not aim for perfection. Aim for “good enough.”

We learn it as kids: don’t let perfect stand in the way of good. But we don’t learn how to apply it.

Most of us have been burned by early launches, failures, and burnout.

And then we get more and more cautious.

But at the same time there is no such thing as a perfect newsletter or a perfect blog or a perfect product.

If you wait to launch forever, you will wait to launch forever.

There are only 3 questions you need to ask yourself to know if something is good enough to go:

How do you know your product is good enough that imperfection is okay?

  1. Are you missing out on key opportunities by not starting, posting, or launching? If yes, start. For example, TikTok isn’t going to be big forever. Just post content. I earned quite a bit of money on Medium at my height. I just left that cash on the table by walking away. Etc.
  2. Are you able to improve more by learning before starting or by getting feedback? If it’s by learning, do a crash course in the next month (no more than a month for most things). If it’s by getting feedback, you’re ready to launch something.
  3. Are you going to lose opportunities by launching? Is this a case where your audience is truly so small that if you launch poorly, you’re going to lose them forever? Is this a movement where you’re worried if you phrase things poorly you’ll be permanently cancelled? Nine times out of ten, the answer is no. But if it’s truly yes – if you have one chance to pitch your favorite literary agent, then pitch other people first and get more pre-launch feedback before sharing.

As I learned from Scott Lamb, the Vice President of Medium, quantity is better than quality because quantity creates quality.

You aren’t going to learn to get better without doing.

You aren’t going to do anything without getting started.
